Whole Foods Magazine: At home spa advice from Larenim's Kirsten Corcoran

Editors seek expert advice from Larenim's Creative Director Kirsten Corcoran in regards to luxury spa products you can use at home. Larenim's Bamboo Skin Polish is the perfect alternative to a facial at a high end spa and contains a variety of healthy ingredients to refresh your skin and leave you with a gorgeous glow.

Other recommendations for good exfoliants are jojoba beads, says Upton, because they “gently exfoliate skin and melt in the process, so they do not abrade and actually soften and condition skin.” Kirsten Corcoran, founder and product manager of Larenim, Worthington, OH, is partial to bamboo stem, pineapple and papaya enzymes and sugar cane alpha-hydroxy-acids as exfoliants.

Diamond Girl's tip to finding fabulous faux accessories

NYC street vendors have some of the best accessories. Every time I'm in the Big Apple I have to take a trip downtown (the best area) to check out all the vendors. I suggest a couple rounds to see who has what and who will give you the best deals.

These clover necklaces are some of my favorite finds for $15 (the designer version $$$$)

Chickies Cleavage Coverage
Chickies Cleavage Coverage
If you like the look of layered tanks but don’t want to have to wear two layers, Chickies Cleavage Coverage is for you. I’ve even tried this little ingenious top and I admit it works well. I have a maxidress that dipped a little too low in the underarm area, exposing my bra underneath my armpits. I frequently wore a tank underneath my dress but found that it was too bunchy for the sleek dress. I snapped on a Chickies top around my bra and it covered my bra effectively and was non-bulky.
Basically it looks like a sports bra from the front that dips down in the back, but with no bra straps. There are little snaps you fasten around your bra in the front, and thus you can wear (formerly) cleavage-baring tops or tops that you just want a little more coverage with.
Another effective solution is donning a bandeau top over your bra as well—I’ve seen them at Target, Forever 21 and the Braza website, above.

The Atkin Report: Pacific Dining Car, the kitchen is always open

By Hillary Atkin

It’s Never Too Late for a Great Meal Downtown or by the Beach

“I’m sorry, the kitchen is closed” is a refrain that’s often heard in LA’s finer restaurants, as it is in cities across America that are not New York or Las Vegas.  And if you’ve ever slipped in just before closing time and experienced the barely- veiled exasperation of staff waiting to clean up and go home, that’s no picnic either.

Neither situation will ever confront you at either location of the Pacific Dining Car, a Southern California institution that is open 24 hours a day. So if you are feeling a USDA prime sirloin at midnight, PDC– not to be confused with another local institution, the Pacific Design Center–is the place.
The inception of the Dining Car goes back to the roaring 20s, and it’s been at the same downtown location since 1923. The Santa Monica branch on Wilshire Boulevard opened in 1990.
Both feature the sort of old-school period luxury where everyone from movie stars to hard-core foodies to hipsters and the nightlife crowd feel right at home.
Although the classic steakhouse menu doesn’t change much, there is a breath of fresh air in the kitchen with the recent hiring of executive Chef Michael Rosen, from previous perches at Reign, the dearly-departed Maple Drive and Les Anges and his own Zeke’s Smokehouse.
“After sitting down with Michael on a few separate occasions and talking about the company vision, his and mine, I felt confident that we were on the same page,” says PDC owner Wesley Idol, part of the fourth generation of family members that has owned the Dining Car. “Michael’s not only a phenomenal chef, he’s a businessman who understands what it takes to maintain a fine dining establishment and provide customers with excellent service.  As well, he understands all the hard work that goes into sustaining success in the restaurant industry.”
Just like everything else that’s been around for a while, it’s time for a bit of a makeover. There are now weekly specials, like free corkage every Wednesday, wine tastings Fridays, Date Night—where couples get a complimentary dessert– and happy hours Monday through Friday from 6PM-9PM, plus a variety of musical entertainment on Saturday nights.
The new late-night menu, starting at11 PM, features all your favorite steaks and sides, plus a selection of salads and the ever-popular chocolate chip pancakes, along with drink specials under $15.
Obviously, liquor laws have to be followed, so you won’t be able to drink past normal closing hours. But hey, nice try.
And speaking of pancakes, the Dining Car’s Sunday breakfast/brunch features a special deal for kids under 12 years old. They can build their own brunch by choosing an egg, turkey, bacon, and a side for $10. And we would be neglectful not to mention the friendly, professional service that accompanies every meal.
We’ll see you there, 24/7.

Great Lengths

Long, flowy skirts are a staple in my closet (another look seen here).  They can be dressed up or dressed down and no matter how you decide to wear one, they always seem to look effortlessly chic.  As I mentioned in my previous post, I'm in love with all of the jewel tone colors for fall.  With the cool LA nights we've been experiencing lately, this skirt has proven to be the perfect transition piece.

{Zara skirt & heels, H&M Sweater, Asos bag, F21 earrings}
I love mixing jewelry, especially bracelets.  I was thrilled Stacy Broff from Diamond Girl Media sent me these Lily & Laura glass bead bracelets.  They are chic, affordable, come in a wide array of colors and benefit a great cause.  Bracelets are available for purchase by visitingwww.shop.diamondgirlmediala.com

stylish finds far from LA

Pittsburgh, PA...
In between quality family time, and any reason to escape the heat, I decided to check out some local vintage stores. Pittsburgh is far from fashionably chic, but you never know what you might find. Being a Target junkie I couldn't pass up this old school cursive "Scorpio" necklace.

Consignment and thrift stores can be hit or miss. I happening to find a couple hits. If you're ever the neighborhood be sure stroll Ellsworth Avenue in Shadyside. Eons, Hey Betty andDesigner Days Boutique are worth a look.

Save on your summer wardrobe: Beach attire that doubles as day wear

No need to splurge on more summer clothes. Beat the heat and look chic by going through through your closet. You're sure to find some great pieces and get creative.

Hot weather calls for desperate but fashionable measures. One idea, turn your cute beach cover up into a daytime dress, accessorize, slip on some sandals and TA DA!
Calypso tunic, Dr. Scholls (swag from about 4 years ago), vintage bead necklace (Bday gift) and gap belt.

P.S. It's never a bad idea to get the opinion of a good friend. Even if they can't talk, a little tail shake signifies you're good to leave the house.

Pacific Dining Car welcomes aboard Chef Michael Rosen

A New Conductor in the Kitchen
Chef Michael Rosen

(August 2011)…The Pacific Dining Car makes its biggest change to date as it welcomes aboard Chef Michael Rosen. A 25-year veteran of the Los Angeles dining scene, Michael Rosen is welcomed with great excitement and anticipation. Michael will be adding a personal touch to already famous dishes on the menu as well as introducing some creations of his own. Michael has been most recognized for his expert culinary skills at highly acclaimed restaurants like Les Anges, Reign, Maple Drive and his own Zeke’s Smokehouse. Michael has been applauded for his talent and has brought something extremely unique to each of these kitchens.

In a letter of recommendation Maria Shriver described Michael as having a wonderful ability to listen to what someone wants and to then translate it into excellent food. Michael Rosen will do just that and more as he now calls the Pacific Dining Car home.

Visit the PDC soon and try some tasty new bites as well as your old favorites.

The beginning of a new journey. Wes Idol, owner of the PDC and Chef Michael Rosen look forward to a long and successful future.
