Petsblogs.com: People Making A Difference

Safety for our pets is a desire for all pet lovers. Living amongst us are individuals that carry the passion for safety beyond the normal efforts. We feel they deserve to be featured in an article telling just how they are trying to make a difference. The two we are featuring today are Ashley Oelsen and Melissa Ramirex.
Ashley Oelsen
Ashley Oelsen has embarked on a journey to help save millions of rescue dogs by building awareness through education and community outreach. Inspired by her love for animals, Ashley brings something very unique and diverse to her day-to-day operations.
Sol

Sol Foundation (Sharing Our Love) named after her rescue dog Sol, was founded by Ashley in 2008 and is truly one of the most unique foundations that unite rescue dogs and children. The bond between humans and animals can be so strong not to mention life changing for both. Her mission is to prevent cruelty to animals through education, awareness and advocacy. She created a very distinctive way to teach kids an established sense of responsibility, and kindness towards animals and other humans that begins with weekly visits, with Sol by her side, to local schools and community centers helping students in the curriculum of reading and writing. In addition to the basic stepping-stones of education that will hopefully lead to the success of future generations, Ashley and Sol commence that initial connection between kids and animals. Unfortunate but factual, many of these kids and rescues share similar backgrounds such as physical abuse, abandonment and lack of attention. Aside from the tutorial benefits that Ashley brings to the table, these students are able to bond with the animals, respect them and learn that with hard work, and responsibility they can find unconditional love in one another, something they may have never experienced.
Ashely was recently awarded a $10,000 donation by Dog Time Media along with a fellow rescuer for their hard work and dedication. Sol Foundation can add this wonderful donation to it’s rescue fund allowing Ashley to continue rescuing, caring for some of the dogs that come out of shelters very ill and then placing them in the proper home. It’s always more than a days work and it NEVER ends. She gave up her full time job to start her foundation and works 24/7 living up to Sol’s mission.
She has determination and a true passion to save homeless pets and unite them with a loving owner. Ashley is an amazing humanitarian with a very big sol. You can learn more about Sol Foundation by visiting Sharing Our Love.

Groomed LA: The Beautiful Life Awaits...Go Flawless Mobile

Go Flawless Mobile Beauty launch party

Pampered to perfection
June 4th 2011 12PM-6PM…Go Flawless Mobile Beauty celebrated it’s launch party by treating guests to some of LA’s best salon and spa services. Instead of running from one location to another, as if anyone has time these days, Go Flawless will bring it to you.
Gohar Abrahamyan, (Founder of Go Flawless) like many women, is a busy mom with a full time job. She understands there's very little time in our schedules for some much needed pampering. On June 4th Gohar launched Go Flawless Mobile Beauty by partnering with some of the best fashion, beauty and spa service companies to promote this fabulous new concept.
It was barely 12:15PM before our suite at the Montage Hotel in Beverly Hills, lavishly decorated with flowers, and filled with delicious snacks, was alive with guests lining up to get glamorous. Go Flawless took a few years off everyone and made a few lines disappear with a little botox while others went right for a hair, make up and manicures provided by Style Bar Beverly Hills. “Pimp my lashes” …no problem with The Lash Factory on hand there no need to wait for 6 weeks with one of those lash serums. These ladies took lashes to the limit.
American Laser Skin Care offered a couple alternatives to refresh your skin with micro-derma abrasion and a mild glycolic peel. No one wanted to leave until they tested the massage “machine” from Modus Therapy.
While guests relaxed in between treatments there was a plethora of good eats and sweet treats from Scrumbtious Cakes and Pastries, and Sissy’s Whoopie Pies. They also had a chance to “shop for a cause” from great yoga wear by AZIAM to Smitten with Luxe, colorful glass bracelets to help raise money for the National Breast Cancer Foundation.

Chef Peter Dills RAVES about The Pacific Dining Car

Pacific Dining Car gets rave reviews from Chef Peter Dills.

Dining with Dills
Food News: Issue No. 09

This Weeks Restaurant Review
The Pacific Dining Car
Old School Steak meets Urban Young Professional.
If you have been following my columns in the newspaper and watching my segments on CNN, you know that I haven't given into the trends, and you also know that I love a great steak. The given names of these steaks seem populate many of the best area restaurants in Los Angeles: The Baseball Steak, The Kansas City Cut, and the Cowboy Steak, are all found as menu items at various locations. There are many restaurants that I have written about as well that come to mind when discussing great steak, Taylor's in La Canada and Morton's in Burbank are two.  Both offer delicious cuts of beef with Old Style service and a real expertise for the craft.  But one restaurant that deserves to be in this manager's starting line up is the Pacific Dining Car in the heart of Downtown Los Angeles.  This fourth generation owned restaurant has all the swagger and homerun power of all the very best in our city. It doesn't hurt
that they serve an incredible Maker's Mark Manhattan as well. You are definitely taking a trip back in time here as you lounge upon Red Leather Booths, the same ones that generations have come to enjoy in comfort.

Most of us Angelinos in the know have been frequenting this fine establishment for years. Enjoying its family style atmosphere, vast menu and availability - 24/7! However, just like everything and everyone in this town, sometimes it's necessary for a little nip and tuck and that's exactly what owner, Wes Idol III, decided to do. Wes told me on my last visit that you could add the Pacific Dining Car to your list of  "hot spots." Wes has implemented specials enticements, such as free corkage every Wednesday, wine tasting (check website for scheduling) Fridays, Date Night (couples receive a complimentary dessert), REALLY??? And a grand Happy Hour, every Monday through Friday from 6PM-9PM. With a variety of entertainment including live music on Saturday nights. The late night menu, now available every night beginning at 10PM, will still include all your favorites from a great steak; to the health conscience salad, or the extravagant chocolate chip pancakes and unbelievable drink specials for under ($15). A "What's Happening" section will be added to the website and shared through Facebook as well.
A favorite for everyone in the family, Sunday breakfast still remains a must at the PDC. There are so many delicious dishes to satisfy every palette, whether you're indulging or counting calories. Kids 12 and under can build their own brunch by choosing one egg, turkey or regular bacon, and one crab.  It's the perfect balance for a nutritious meal, and only ($10).
Back to ordering, here are of few of my selections that my guest April, "The Queen of Maker's Mark Manhattans" and I sampled.  First we both agreed to share the Crab Cakes made with fresh blue crab meat and the heirloom tomato salad from the great beginnings portion of the menu. For the neophytes in the group, that is an appetizer.
I couldn't wait any longer, so I ordered the Cowboy Steak, and it was delicious, the closer I nuzzled to the bone, the more flavor greeted me.  A Steak that John Wayne would have said, put'er here pilgrim.  My partner in this downtown journey apparently didn't get enough of the crab as she was talking about ordering more. She moved along to the Filet of Oscar, describing its tenderness to me in each bite. The dish is coupled with Dungeness crab, fresh asparagus and a BĂ©arnaise sauce. All steaks are prime beef, with the burgers using the same prime label as well. For salad lovers, there is a fantastic grilled Shrimp Salad that I will try on my diet days. As far as the Wine List goes, Wine Spectator Magazine gave them very high marks! I shall return!
